Cartier Basculante 'CPCP' 2499C

The Cartier Basculante may not be widely known outside of collector circles, but it is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating and historically significant models in Cartier’s lineup, especially in its CPCP form.

Part of the  Collection Privée Cartier Paris (CPCP), this model belongs to a special line of mechanical timepieces produced between 1998 and 2008. The CPCP collection was Cartier’s tribute to its rich horological heritage, reviving classic designs from its archives and equipping them with traditional watchmaking elements such as hand-finished mechanical movements and refined details.

The Basculante was originally introduced in 1932, featuring a unique pivoting case design. The rectangular case flips vertically within its frame, a clever mechanism originally intended to protect the dial, but also capable of standing upright like a miniature desk clock. This functional elegance makes it a very cool piece.

Cartier brought the Basculante back during the CPCP era as a celebration of mechanical watchmaking, a bold statement in the aftermath of the Quartz Crisis. True to the CPCP signature style, this version features a guilloché dial, blued steel hands, and Roman numerals, all housed in a finely crafted rectangular case.
