Rolex Submariner 16800

A special find.

The Rolex Submariner is an all-time favourite, for literally everyone. The rich history together with its unique design changes throughout the year is unmatched. This particular example is a transitional piece which makes it even more interesting.

From the late 1970s onwards, Rolex began equipping their watches with more durable sapphire crystals. These so-called "transitional" models often came with matte dials. This particular Submariner Date is an excellent example of such a transitional model, still retaining its original matte dial.

However this matte dial is beautifully aged which is the exact reason why collectors are in love with the matte dials. The way matte dials age are very interesting, because you never know what will happen.

The hour markers on this example have developed a warm, pumpkin-ish patina that matches the lime on the hands. A rare find, as many of these dials were replaced with later service dials over the years. The bezel insert remains deep black, while the pearl has aged beautifully to an amber tone.

The case is in excellent condition, the dial is simply stunning and the case is complimented by well-preserved lugs. Finding a good condition 16800 becomes harder every single day, which is the reason why we get excited when we find examples like this one.
